Cords
Yeah, this is a thing. I know…who knew?
Let’s take a look at what scripture has to say about it then how to tell if you are dealing with this and how to pray about these things.
Proverbs 5:21-23 - “21For your ways are in full view of the Lord,
and He examines all your paths. 22The evil deeds of the wicked ensnare them; the cords of their sins hold them fast. 23For lack of discipline they will die, led astray by their own great folly”
Hosea 11:4 - “I led them with cords of human kindness, with ties of love. To them I was like one who lifts a little child to the cheek, and I bent down to feed them.”
Isaiah 5:18 - “Woe to those who draw sin along with cords of deceit,
and wickedness as with cart ropes,”
Psalm 107:13-14 - “Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and He saved them from their distress. 14He brought them out of darkness, the utter darkness, and broke away their chains.”
Psalm 140:5 - “The arrogant have hidden a snare for me; they have spread out the cords of their net and have set traps for me along my path.”
Job 30:11 - ESV “Because God has loosed my cord and humbled me,
they have cast off restraint in my presence.”
Ecclesiastes 12:6-7 - “6Remember him—before the silver cord is severed, and the golden bowl is broken; before the pitcher is shattered at the spring, and the wheel broken at the well, 7and the dust returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.”
Hebrews 12:29 - “or our God is a consuming fire.”
As you can see from the scriptures there are different types of cords. Some are good and some are bad. The two main types are cords of sin and traps or snares that have cords.
Sin has cords. This is the most common one we have to deal with. Case in point, when there is recurring sin that you can’t seem to stop - a cycle that keeps repeating - it usually has a cord. It can also have a demon that is attached to you with that very same cord. Even if you’re repented of the sin, been studying scripture to change your thinking, but you still find the sin recurs. That is a cord. And cords can attach demons to a particular behavior. You know there’s a demon when you “can’t stop.”
The other is a trap or snare. These are put in place by the devil. But he can’t place a trap unless we have created an opening or it is time for a test. Many times the openings come from our thought life. If we haven’t been taking our thoughts captive as 2 Corinthians 5:3-6 says, and mulling something over repeatedly the Lord may allow a test, or if we have started to speak what has been going on in our thoughts, then that creates an opening for the devil to throw something at us.
There are also cords with relationships, whether it is a friendship, partnership in business, or romantic - all have cords. If the relationship was toxic, there were cords. If the relationship was romantic and is someone you just can’t “seem” to get over and you think of them a lot, may even have depression from it - there’s cords. All these things hang on with cords. Anything that is “plaguing” you is a cord.
How to get rid of them:

Ask for forgiveness of the sin and receive it.

As Ecclesiastes 12:6-7 says, sever the cord(s) in Jesus Name, and loose all demons attached.

Hebrews 12:29 - With the mighty fire of God Almighty, or sometimes I say the Fire of the Holy Spirit, I call the fire of God to burn up the cords and all residue of them. Like 1 Kings 18:30-39 says, His fire consumed the sacrifice with not only the animal but the wood, water, stones, and earth it was upon. There was nothing left!

Ask the Lord to show you when your thoughts are going off track and take them captive in Jesus Name, cast them down, & replace with the Word of God regarding that matter.
