Who is God, His Names, & His Character

When we introduce ourselves we say, “I am (name).” We are making a simple statement of “who we are”. There is no one who can tell you that you are not that named person. Ever. It is your identity. You are who you say you are. AND names are personal. The Name and titles of God are no different.

When we look at the names/titles of God we see the same thing. He is who He says He is. Can’t change it. It is Him. It’s His personality. And it is a great privilege that He shares His names with us. He has given us His Name (Ephesians 3:14-15). I don't fully understand this myself...yet. It's extraordinary! It’s personal. It reveals more than the name “God”. It is His substance and we learn His personality. And the more we spend time with Him in the Word and talk with Him about it, the more we see Him actively involved in our lives in the way that He “describes” Himself.

It’s important for us to know these names when we address Him in prayer, rightfully, respectfully. And when we address Him in prayer using one of His names it enlarges our expectation...our faith...that shows Him to us as His name or title says He is. He is the everlasting God, the Creator of all. We want to address God with reverence and wisdom when we pray.

It’s also important to remind ourselves of Hebrews 13:8 - God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. What He said about Himself in days gone by is the same today! Let Him show up in your life in these ways. These names are who He is and what He is like. Way better than a dating app!! He is our first love. Who loved us before the foundation of the world and had us planned in His heart from that point.

Listed below are only a small part of the many scriptures in each area. I suggest doing a full study on the area of interest.

  1. YHVH - Exodus 3:12-15. I AM. The One bringing into being; Life-giver; Giver of existence; Creator; He who brings to pass; Performer of His promises; He who causes to fall, rain or lightning; Destroying foes; The One Who Is; The Absolute and Unchangeable One; The Existing; Everliving: I shall be with you; He who will be IT with you; He is who is essentially unnamable, inexplicable.

  2. Jesus - Luke 1:31. Is a translation of the Hebrew “Joshua” - “Yashua”, that means, “Jehovah is salvation, is the Savior”. It was a common name among Jews at the time which is most likely why they missed it when He was on the earth (Ex. 17:9; Luke 3:29; Col 4:11).

  3. Jehovah Jireh - The Lord will provide. He is our provider: Philippians 4:19, 3 John 2 and Genesis 22:13-14.

  5. Jehovah Shalom - The Lord our peace. 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24, John 14:27, & Philippians 4:6-7. Good to use when anxious or afraid. Whenever God showed up to people and they were afraid He would always say, “Peace, be still.”

  6. Jehovah Nissi - The Lord our banner. Exodus 17:15 (all). Represents He is the one that stands with you in battles. You are not alone. The “banner” is God Himself as a “name tag” over you saying “you are His”.

  7. Jehovah Tsidkenu - The Lord Who is righteousness. He is our

righteousness - 2 Corinthians 5:21, Romans 10:4, Philippians 3:9, Jeremiah 23:5-6. Good for using when you need Godly judgment and righteousness in situations, decisions that need to made.

  9. Jehovah Shammah - The Lord is always present - The Lord who is there. Ezekiel 48:35. Such an intimate prayer time with this title. As you go into

prayer, call Him Jehovah Shaman. He is righter there in the same room

with you, as close as your own breath.

  10. Jehovah M’Kaddesh - The Lord Who sanctifies. Leviticus 11:44, 20:7-8.

God is Who sanctifies you and makes you holy, He sets you apart for Himself and perfects that which concerns us. Praying like: “Jehovah M’Kaddesh, I need more holiness my life. I needs greater victory over temptation. I need strength over son. I want to represent You more purely to a corrupt world. Please help me grow in Your sanctification. You are my Jehovah M’Kaddesh.”
